Venue: Adelaide Town Hall, King William Street, Adelaide
Registration closing date – Friday 31 August
Welcome
Welcome to SA’s PIA State Conference. This year’s conference theme has been framed around population change and the need for us to plan now if South Australia is to reach its target of 2 million people by 2050 in a sustainable, productive and inclusive manner.
2million is about planners from all disciplines coming together to explore how we can best lead South Australia towards its population target in a way that achieves good outcomes for the community, the environment and the economy.
By engaging with a range of planning and planning-related disciplines, 2million will tackle a range of issues around how we plan for and guide population growth. This interactive 2-day conference will challenge and inspire you to take a positive role in the future development of our State by introducing you to new ideas about core issues such as:
- Population Structure – who will we be planning for in 2050 and what will we need?
- Growth Management – how and where do we grow in South Australia?
- Transport – how will we move around our urban and regional areas?
- Infrastructure – how will we service an enlarged community?
- Housing Affordability and Choice – where and how will we deliver decent affordable housing?
- Rural and Regional Areas – will population growth be evenly distributed? will our rural towns survive?
- Mining – how will we manage the growth around our mining communities?
- Suburban revitalisation – can we make infill and consolidation work to create sustainable and vibrant communities?
- Sustainability – can we use the power of 2M to be more sustainable?
- Society – how will a more populous South Australia look and behave?
Join us for 2million, as we work together to plan for a better future for South Australia.
We all have the opportunity to be leaders and implementers of change – what are you waiting for?
Message from Conference Convenor
Dr Donna Ferretti
A very warm welcome to the 2007 PIA State Conference. The South Australian Division of PIA is pleased to present an exciting and eclectic program of events that explore the implications for the planning profession of the State Government's population target of 2 million people by the year 2050. As you may be aware, South Australia has an enviable tradition of responsive and innovative planning and, in the face of what will be a highly challenging period in our State's development, it is imperative that we understand what is driving the anticipated population growth, where it is happening and how we might best respond in order to ensure that our urban and regional environments are good and fulfilling places in which to live, work and play.
To this end, the Conference Committee has endeavoured to present a program which is stimulating, challenging and which reminds us of the important role our profession will play in shaping the quality of life in our urban and regional areas. The formal sessions provide a good balance between papers and panel discussions (with the transport session to be conducted on a train travelling on the Gawler-Adelaide route), and there are a number of interesting walking tours of the City as well as a bus tour of Port Adelaide. Importantly, we have provided an opportunity to showcase the considerable talent and intellectual capacity of our young planners in a number of sessions which consider what their aspirations for the year 2050 might hold.
I very much look forward to sharing two very interesting days of discussion and contemplation with you and trust that you will find the Conference a fulfilling, thought-provoking and enjoyable experience.
