Ageing Atlas Overview
Utilising a funding grant from Improving with Age - Our Ageing Plan for South Australia, the online Ageing Atlas has been updated and expanded to better assist:
- local government
- state government agencies
- aged care service providers and
- property developers
to plan future accommodation and services for older South Australians.
Using a map of South Australia as your reference, you can obtain information based on statistical local areas and council areas. This information is presented in map, graph and tabular form.
For example, the information can show:
- where high proportions of older people are projected to live
- the type of accommodation in which they live
- whether they live alone
- what their household income is
- whether they are in the labour force
- whether they provide unpaid care to a person with a disability.
Data Available in the Ageing Atlas
You can use the online Ageing Atlas to obtain data for statistical local areas or council areas, based on the following themes.

Ageing and The South Australian Planning Strategy
The South Australian Planning Strategy acknowledges that South Australia's ageing population presents significant challenges for land use planning. The Planning Strategy therefore aims to facilitate the creation of living conditions that allow the aged to have healthy, enjoyable and productive lifestyles. To achieve this, urban planning must make allowances for the demand for smaller accommodation located close to services, transport and shops. A sufficient supply of this type of accommodation will ensure people aged over 65 will have a choice about whether to remain in their family home, or relocate to smaller more affordable housing, retirement villages or care facilities. Effective planning also ensures there is land set aside for the provision of services that an ageing population requires, such as access to health and community services. It is critical that these services are targeted where they are most needed.
The information contained in the Ageing Atlas will help to monitor the implementation of the Planning Strategy by providing a valuable resource for planners, policy makers, property developers and service providers.
Data Limitations
Users of the Ageing Atlas should be aware of the limitations of the data.
To avoid the identification of individuals, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) randomises data used in the Ageing Atlas. Although census data is not available for individuals, cross classification of census data can still reveal individual household information if the number of people meeting the specified criteria is very small. To overcome this potential confidentiality issue, the ABS randomises all output data which has three or less people in that classification. Users of the Ageing Atlas should therefore be aware of small numbers of persons in Statistical Local Areas or Local Government Areas, particularly when the data is presented as a percentage. Also, due to the randomisation of data, totals for Local Government Areas may differ slightly to the aggregated total of the Statistical Local Areas. However, the differences between total persons figures are typically less than one percent.
