Desalination plant at Port Stanvac

For information about the 'Major Developments' assessment process (a detailed assessment process with opportunity for public comment before any decision is made on whether a proposal can proceed or not) please visit the Major Development Proposals page

Proponent: SA Water

Proposal description: Port Stanvac has been identified by the State’s Desalination Working Group as the preferred site for a new desalination plant as part of a major investment in water infrastructure to secure South Australia’s water supply.

In April 2008 the Minister for Urban Development and Planning declared the proposed desalination plant project would be assessed using the major development provisions of the Development Act. A Map of the Major Project Declaration Area appears here:

The proposed desalination project has a capital value of approximately $1.37 billion and includes the following elements:

  • A desalination plant located at Port Stanvac with a rated capacity of 150ML/day (approximately 50 GL per annum) based upon reverse osmosis technology
  • Capability for capacity upgrade to 300 ML/day (100 GL per annum)
  • Intake and outlet pipelines to draw raw seawater into the facility and discharge concentrate to the Gulf
  • Electricity supplied from the grid, but sourced from Renewable Energy sources
