Population Projections Enquiry System - Introduction
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: The Population Projections Enquiry System has been developed by Planning SA with the assistance of the Local Government Research and Development Scheme and the Local Government Association.
The Population Projections Enquiry System provides online access to the current age-sex population projections released by the State Government at the following levels:
- The State
- Statistical Divisions of South Australia (seven regions)
- Local Government Areas (LGA), and
- Statistical Local Areas (SLA) of South Australia
[Refer to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) - Catalogue No. 1216.0 for technical details of 'Statistical Divisions' and 'Statistical Local Areas']
Information regarding the Population Projections for South Australia and Statistical Divisions is also available in a written report:
- Population Projections for South Australia (2001-31) and the State’s Statistical Divisions (2001-21) [PDF 870 KB] (published July 2007)
What online projections are available?
The following projections are available at each level of geography:
State (2006 to 2031): Three series of population projections are available for the State from 2006 to 2031 based on 'high', 'medium' and 'low' assumptions for future fertility, mortality and migration. An additional scenario is available for the State based on the '2 million population by 2050' population target in the South Australian Strategic Plan
Statistical Divisions (2006 to 2021): Three series of population projections are available for SA's seven Statistical Divisions from 2006 to 2021 based on high, medium and low assumptions for future fertility, mortality and migration.
SA's seven Statistical Divisions are: Adelaide Statistical Division, Outer Adelaide Statistical Division, Murray Lands Statistical Division, South East Statistical Division, Eyre Statistical Division, Northern Statistical Division and Yorke and Lower North Statistical Division.
At its meeting on 28 May 2007, State Cabinet endorsed the State and Statistical Division population projections for use by State agencies.
Local Government Areas (2006 to 2021): LGA projections (from 2006 to 2021) are available for the medium projection series only. SA has 68 LGAs.
Statistical Local Area projections (2006 to 2021): SLA projections (from 2006 to 2021) are available for the medium projection series only. There were 124 SLAs in SA in 2001.
Important cautionary information regarding the use of population projections
These population projections should not be regarded as forecasts, but as calculations of future populations based on particular assumptions about future fertility, mortality and migration. Actual future populations will vary from these projections. The assumptions used for generating each series for the State and its Statistical Divisions are outlined in an Appendix to the written Report referred to above.
Users of these projections should satisfy themselves that the projections are suitable for the intended purpose. It is recommended that users compare these projections with the latest available statistics of Estimated Resident Population released by the ABS.
These projections are based on population estimates from the 2001 ABS Census of Population and Housing and other relevant data. Demographic data required to produce a new set of population projections based on the 2006 ABS Census of Population and Housing will not be available until late 2008. Therefore, a 2006 set of population projections will not be available until 2009.
DISCLAIMER: These projections are provided in good faith. The State of South Australia, its agents and employees are not liable for any damage or loss which may occur as a result of any person or organization taking or not taking action based on these population projections.
