Strategic Land Planning & Initiatives

Planning SA undertakes strategic land use planning for the State Government.

This includes the development of land use planning frameworks and strategies for all areas of the State, and Master Plans for various towns and cities.

Population & demographics

An important aspect of strategic land use planning is the monitoring of population and population trends.

Planning SA has on-going responsibility within State Government to provide age-sex population projections at State, Statistical Division (SD) and Statistical Local Area (SLA) level. These are available online, as is a new Ageing Atlas.

Planning SA also undertakes and assists with various demographic research projects, including initiatives such as the Workplace Atlas and Journey to Work mapping.

More information can be found in our Population and Demographics section.

Land Monitoring

Supply of land for residential, industrial and commercial development in the Adelaide metropolitan area has been the subject of analysis for many years.

Information on the status of the land market is used to:

  • assist the land development industry to assess the land market and plan land division activities;
  • support the state and regional strategic planning process; and
  • provide information which is used in projecting the distribution of housing
    construction and population.

Planning SA produces regular broadacre land monitoring reports, has recently updated a Database of Retail Land Use and is completing an update of the Industrial Land Database.

More information can be found in our Land Monitoring section

Planning Strategy for South Australia

Principal among the land use and development strategies developed for the State Government by Planning SA is the Planning Strategy for South Australia. The Planning Strategy provides direction from the State Government on land use and development activities across the State.

The Strategy is divided into various volumes based on geographic areas. There are currently five volumes in the Planning Strategy:

  • The Planning Strategy for Metropolitan Adelaide (December 2007)(including the Residential Development Program)
  • The Planning Strategy for the Outer Metropolitan Adelaide Region (December 2007)
  • The Planning Strategy for Regional SA (January 2003, as amended at December 2007)
  • The Yorke Peninsula Regional Land Use Framework (December 2007)
  • The Greater Mount Gambier Master Plan (February 2008)

More information, including the Strategy documents themselves, can be found in the Planning Strategy for South Australia section.

The development of the next iterations of the Planning Strategy will be guided by the Government's Planning Reforms 2008 initiatives.
