Planning Strategy for Regional SA
There are currently five volumes in the Planning Strategy for South Australia:
- The Planning Strategy for Metropolitan Adelaide (December 2007)
- The Planning Strategy for the Outer Metropolitan Adelaide Region (December 2007)
- The Planning Strategy for Regional SA (January 2003, as amended at December 2007)
- The Yorke Peninsula Regional Land Use Framework (December 2007)
- The Greater Mount Gambier Master Plan (February 2008)
The Planning Strategy provides direction from the State Government on land use and development over the medium term (a period of 10-15 years).
The Planning Strategy for Regional SA (January 2003) details directions for various regional planning areas of the state, including specific directions for:
- Outback
- Eyre Peninsula
- Mid North
- Upper Spencer Gulf
- Riverland
- Murraylands
- South East
- Kangaroo Island
Please note: Two sections of the original Planning Strategy for Regional SA (January 2003) volume have since been superseded. They were the sections applicable to the:
- 'Inner Region' (those regional areas closest to metropolitan Adelaide); that section was superseded by the Planning Strategy for the Outer Metropolitan Adelaide Region in August 2006
- Yorke Peninsula (that section was superseded by the Yorke Peninsula Regional Land Use Framework in December 2007)
Another volume - the Greater Mount Gambier Master Plan (February 2008) - supplements the content of the South East section, superseding it as applicable to the Greater Mount Gambier area defined in the Master Plan.

Updating the Planning Strategy for Regional SA
Under a new State Government approach to regional land use planning, the entire ‘Regional SA’ volume of the Planning Strategy is being updated on a region-by-region basis over a two year period.
The Planning Strategy for Regional SA (January 2003) will therefore be gradually replaced by various stand-alone volumes of the Planning Strategy titled 'Regional Land Use Frameworks' (one for each country planning region). It is expected that the last of these will be completed by mid 2009.
This process has begun with the Yorke Peninsula Region and the development of the Yorke Peninsula Regional Land Use Framework, which was adopted as a new volume of the Planning Strategy on 13 December 2007 (link to another Planning SA page).
Regional Frameworks for the Mid-North and the Far North are currently in the preparation stages, and a Framework for the combined Riverland/Murraylands region has also begun.
Greater Mount Gambier Master Plan
In addition, the Greater Mount Gambier Master Plan was formally adopted as a volume of the Planning Strategy on 28 February 2008. It provides direction for the future development of the Greater Mount Gambier area.
